First: is your festival run actually over?

There’s no bell. Three signals together mean it’s time to move:

Your premiere status is spent. Most festivals want a world, U.S., or state premiere, and each acceptance burns one. Once the tiers you cared about have passed, you’re submitting out of habit.
Acceptances have dried up for two or three cycles. Programmers work in seasons. If two consecutive seasons come back empty, the third usually will too.
You’re 12–18 months past your premiere. Festivals favor recent work and many have completion-date cutoffs. A two-year-old film competes against this year’s crop with a handicap.

One nuance worth knowing: festival screening rights are almost always non-exclusive, so playing festivals doesn’t block distribution later. What does block you is going public too early — posting the film mid-circuit disqualifies it from most premiere categories.

Before you distribute anything: clear your rights

Music. The most common trap by far. Festival-use-only sync licenses are cheap, widely used, and cover nothing commercial. If you licensed a track “for festival use,” renegotiate for the media and territories you’re entering — or replace the cue. Check both the sync license (composition) and the master use license (recording); they’re separate rights.

Cast. If you shot under a SAG-AFTRA short-film agreement, it limits how the finished film can be exploited and generally requires you to return to the union before a commercial release. Read the one you signed — terms differ by agreement type and budget tier.

Stock, archival, locations, and artwork. Stock footage and archival clips are often licensed for a limited term or limited media — pull every invoice and check expiry dates and permitted uses. Location agreements, releases for visible artwork, and recognizable trademarks all have to survive the move to a commercial platform.

Chain of title. One folder: writer, director, and producer agreements, all cast and crew releases, every license, and your U.S. Copyright Office registration. No buyer will license a film they can’t verify you own.

Fix any gap before you list. Discovering it mid-deal is how deals die.

The four distribution routes

Route 1 — Free public release (YouTube, Vimeo)

Best for: first films, calling cards, and anything where reach matters more than revenue.

You give the film away and take audience, credibility, and momentum in exchange. For many shorts that’s the right trade — direct revenue is modest, and a large audience for your work is a real asset when you’re financing the next project.

Do it deliberately, not by default. Release on a fixed date and push it to your festival audience, your cast and crew’s networks, and any press that covered the run — all inside 72 hours. A film that dribbles out gets no algorithmic help; a concentrated first-week spike does.

Route 2 — Curated platforms and marketplace listings

Best for: films with a clear genre hook or a strong festival record.

Curated short-film channels — the horror and sci-fi verticals, the staff-picks ecosystems, the indie curation sites — bring an audience already there to watch shorts, which YouTube’s open ocean does not. Selection is competitive and terms vary, so read for two things: exclusivity (how long are you locked in, and does it block Route 3?) and takedown rights (can you leave?).

Shorts do get licensed, just not through the channels features use. The real buyer categories:

Broadcast and streaming shorts strands — public television, regional broadcasters, and services running curated short blocks. Non-exclusive, territory-limited deals are common.
Inflight entertainment. Airlines program shorts constantly to fill gaps between features, buying through content aggregators rather than directly. Short runtimes are an advantage here, not a limitation.

Brands and anthologies. Films with a strong single idea get picked up for anthology programs and brand-funded series.

Route 4 — Use the short as IP

Best for: shorts with a world, a premise, or a character that’s bigger than 12 minutes.

Your short isn’t only a film — it’s a proof of concept, and the rights to expand it are separately sellable. A producer who options your short’s adaptation rights is buying the demonstrated fact that the idea works on screen, which is exactly what a script alone can’t prove.

Days 1–30 — Audit. Confirm the run is over, complete the clearance pass, register the copyright, build the deliverables package.
Days 31–60 — Position and list. Pick a primary route plus one secondary route that doesn’t conflict with it. Write the listing or pitch: what the film is, who it’s for, what rights, what territory and term. Put it live and start outreach.
Days 61–90 — Release and convert. Execute the release or work the offers, then send the audience somewhere — your next project, your mailing list, your other work.

Two mistakes worth avoiding

Waiting for permission. No gatekeeper will tell you the run is finished. Shorts lose their moment in a drawer while a filmmaker waits for an acceptance that isn’t coming.

Signing exclusivity you don’t need. A five-year worldwide exclusive on a short is almost never worth it — shorts do best across several non-exclusive, territory-limited deals.
